feat(providers): pluggable external app provider interface and Screeny Studio adapter - #973
This PR introduces the External App Provider Subsystem and provides a first-class adapter for Screeny Studio.
It allows Tronbyt Server to dynamically discover, configure, scale, and stream 30 FPS generative animations, physics simulations, and procedural graphics (such as Boids, Split-Flap Clock, Metaballs, Bats, Flyover, Leaves, and custom shaders) directly to Tidbyt Gen 1, Gen 2, MatrixPortal, and Tronberry (Raspberry Pi) devices.
Note
This branch builds on top of PR #972 (Multi-Chunk Animation Architecture). Once #972 is merged into main, this PR cleanly rebases to include only the provider subsystem and Screeny adapter commits.
Crossfade Transition Cleanup: Automatically detects and discards Screeny's 2.0-second patch crossfade, ensuring device animations and catalog previews are 100% clean, crisp, and free from blending artifacts.
High-Resolution 128x64 Scalers for Tronberry / Raspberry Pi (internal/scaler):
Bicubic (Catmull-Rom with anti-ringing, default): Continuous subpixel gradients across all 8,192 physical LEDs—ideal for 3D shaders, lighting gradients, and smooth particle animations.
Scale2x / EPX (AdvMAME2x): Pattern-matches diagonal transitions to smooth angles without blur, keeping exact palette colors razor-sharp—ideal for clocks, split-flap airport boards, dials, and retro pixel art.
Bilinear & Nearest-Neighbor: Standard color interpolation and retro 2x2 pixel doubling options.
Selectable globally in settings or customized per installed app instance.
High-framerate 30 FPS animations are automatically partitioned into memory-safe sequential chunks matching device limits (450 KB for ESP32 / Tidbyt Gen 1 & Gen 2, 5 MB for Raspberry Pi / Tronberry).
Animations and previews are cached under data/webp/<device_id>/ and cache/previews/ so devices continue running uninterrupted even if the Screeny container restarts.
Web UI Integration:
Content Settings (/settings/content): Manage the Screeny Studio connection URL, run 3-second connectivity tests, and choose the default 128x64 upscaling filter.
Add App Catalog (/apps): Dynamic provider dropdown filter appears when external providers are active. Screeny apps are clearly badged with [Screeny].
Live Previews: Rich, unchunked animated previews in the browser config editor.
🐳 Quick Start: Running Screeny Studio in Docker
The official container image ghcr.io/gotwalt/screeny-studio:latest provides Screeny Studio with GPU hardware acceleration (Vulkan) for rendering 30 FPS generative patches.
Add the screeny service to your docker-compose.yml:
Hardware Acceleration: Mounting /dev/dri:/dev/dri and passing group_add: ["993"] (or your host's render/video group GID) grants Screeny direct access to GPU acceleration for smooth 30 FPS animations.
Host Networking: With network_mode: host, Screeny binds directly to host port 8787. In Tronbyt Server, point your Studio URL to http://127.0.0.1:8787 (or your host LAN IP http://192.168.1.X:8787).
If running Tronbyt inside a standard Docker bridge network instead of host networking, use ports: ["8787:8787"] on the Screeny service and set SCREENY_STUDIO_URL=http://screeny-studio:8787.
Start Screeny:
docker compose up -d screeny

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 9371a
The Screeny integration works in its main path, but several issues should be fixed before merge. Rendered patches can differ from the requested settings after Studio-side changes. Compose deployments lose operator environment settings, including the one that disables Niblet Cloud. Cache cleanup and draft previews can degrade or overwrite chunked playback for other apps.

Cached re-push can send a stale image after a multi-chunk push.
A multi-chunk push to a persistent pushed app does not update pushed/<installID>.webp. That file keeps the image from the last single-chunk push. The cached re-push branch reads this file and sends it with Notify(device.ID, imgBytes). The device can then show the older image instead of the multi-chunk animation.
The chunks are saved to a different location. Load them with getAppChunks and send them when there is more than one chunk.

I put this on discord too : there is also a regression in here. render interval can't bet set to 0 anymore, so clocks will get the default 10 minutes if set to 0.
- Invalidate activePatchID and lastParams on capture/activation failure and periodically re-sync state
- Preserve URL path prefix when dialing Screeny Studio WebSocket
- Reject HTTP redirects and validate connection IPs against link-local/cloud metadata
- Normalize map types and nil configs before comparing saved configs
- Avoid persisting draft preview configs to disk or active rotation sequences
- Ensure preview cache cleanup only removes chunks and cache entries for matching provider
- Pass bounded timeout context to ListApps in getAppMetadata
- Trigger every_display notification sound on chunk 0 ACK and send volume before multi-chunk loop
- Fix WaitGroup sync in TestExternalAppUIntervalFallbackAndNonBlockingAdd
- Set protocol_version in TestMultiChunk_WebSocketPreviewPlayback
- Reformat content.html with djlint and restore compose environment variables
- Remove unused ScreenyMaxWebPBytes config and update documentation references
…alls
Screeny and other external apps were previously bypassing app.UInterval
and re-rendering on every rotation dwell cycle once served. Live frame
capture and WebP encoding for Screeny takes 30-68s, which was blocking
GetNextAppImage and stalling the WebSocket loop for preceding apps.
This change:
- Respects app.UInterval (defaulting to 10 minutes) for all external apps.
- Refreshes expired external apps asynchronously in the background when
cached chunks already exist, serving the cached frames immediately to
keep the rotation loop responsive.
- Allows callers to use existing cached chunks if a background render
is already in flight rather than waiting.
- Extends background pre-rendering timeouts to 2 minutes to accommodate
longer frame captures.
- Cleans up dead appRenderServed tracking state.
…ull-encode
- Partitions multi-chunk WebP encoding across available CPU cores concurrently
using WaitGroup.Go, cutting encoding latency proportionally to chunk count.
- If target duration exceeds maxChunkDurationMs, runs full-animation encoding
concurrently with chunk partitioning so FullWebPBytes is populated without
delaying hardware chunk generation.
Setting uinterval to 0 is the intended mechanism for clocks and rapid
display apps to re-render on every rotation cycle. Previously, a <= 0 check
overwrote uinterval=0 with the default 10 minutes.
This fix:
- Preserves uinterval=0 when adding or updating apps.
- Only defaults to 10 minutes when uinterval is negative (< 0) or unset.
- Updates possiblyRender and renderExternalApp to treat uinterval=0 as
expired on every rotation so clocks stay accurate.
- Adds regression tests for uinterval=0 on add, update, and rotation.
