feat(wheels)!: ✨ publish MPI-enabled wheels across MPI ABI families - #426
This PR publishes MPI-enabled monoprop wheels that work with the MPI library already installed on the user's machine. They don't bundle MPI, and they don't require the MPI-5 standard ABI. The approach follows mpi4py's wheels (cibw/, _mpiabi.py). We build one extension per MPI ABI family, identified by the library's soname:
mpich (libmpi.so.12): MPICH, Intel MPI, MVAPICH and Cray MPICH.
openmpi (libmpi.so.40).
mpiabi (libmpi_abi.so.1): built and tested locally, not shipped yet. It is waiting for an mpi4py release that uses it.
monoprop loads the variant matching the family mpi4py is using.
How it works at runtime. Every build ships a serial monoprop._core. MPI builds add monoprop._core_mpi.<abi>, in a separate nanobind domain.
A propagator built with comm=None always runs serially. Importing monoprop never imports mpi4py or initializes MPI.
Passing an mpi4py communicator loads the matching MPI module on first use. Before loading, monoprop checks the ABI family (from mpi4py's wheel file name, or from the library otherwise) and the MPI version.
Each implementation has a minimum version: Open MPI 4.1, MPICH 4.0, Intel MPI 2021.0, MVAPICH 3.0, Cray MPICH 8.1. Configure-time and runtime checks both enforce it. An implementation not in that list only gets a warning.
C++ SDK. The SDK in the wheel gains libmonoprop_mpi_<abi>. find_package(monoprop CONFIG COMPONENTS MPI) selects it to match the consumer's MPI. With OPTIONAL_COMPONENTS MPI, a consumer without MPI, or with an MPI of another ABI family, still gets the serial monoprop::monoprop.
Design spec and implementation plan: docs/superpowers/specs/2026-10-23-mpi-wheels-design.md and docs/superpowers/plans/2026-10-23-mpi-wheels.md. They are not part of this PR and can be shared on request.
Stacked on #421. The base branch is feat/scikit-build-config-settings. Follow-up #430, stacked on this PR, makes each propagator run on a private duplicate of its communicator.
Breaking changes:
monoprop.has_mpi is removed. Use bool(monoprop.MPI_ABIS).
comm=None now always runs serially. MPI builds used to fall back to MPI_COMM_WORLD.
monoprop::monoprop is serial in every build. MPI C++ consumers use COMPONENTS MPI and monoprop::monoprop_mpi.
Changes
CMake
Core sources are compiled once per variant (cmake/custom/monopropCore.cmake).
cmake/custom/monopropMPIABI.cmake reads the ABI family and vendor version from the mpi.h macros and enforces the minimum versions. A probe is compiled with try_compile, never linked or run, and the values are read back with file(STRINGS), as FindMPI does for MPI_VERSION. The file is installed for consumers too.
cmake/custom/monopropMPI.cmake has two modes: monoprop.mpi-abis<abi>=<prefix> entries build one variant per prefix (wheel builds), and otherwise FindMPI provides one variant (source builds).
Under CIBUILDWHEEL=1, the wheel keeps no RPATHs from the build machine. On macOS, the MPI binaries search the usual MPI locations instead (/usr/local/lib, /opt/homebrew/lib, /opt/local/lib), as mpi4py's wheels do.
Bindings: the comm bridge is split into comm_serial.cpp and comm_mpi.cpp, so bindings.cpp.in no longer needs #ifdefs. monoprop_add_python_core builds _core and _core_mpi.<abi>.
Python
New monoprop._backend (core_module, detect_mpi4py_abi, check_mpi_version) and the public monoprop.MPI_ABIS.
New errors: MPIUnavailableError, MPIAbiMismatchError, MPIVersionError.
Dispatch now goes through core_module(comm).
Wheels
tools/cibw/install-mpi.sh installs PyPI mpich==5.0.2 and openmpi==5.0.11 to build against. On Linux, ldconfig runs after the build dependencies are installed, so stub generation can load _core without build RPATHs.
repair-wheel.sh excludes MPI from auditwheel/delocate, then runs check_wheel.py. On macOS, delocate runs with --ignore-missing-dependencies, because the MPI libraries are deliberately unresolved at repair time, and with --no-sanitize-rpaths, which keeps the MPI search directories.
check_wheel.py audits, for each variant:
the MPI linkage;
the RPATHs: no empty or absolute entries, and every macOS MPI binary keeps the MPI search directories;
that no MPI library is bundled;
that _mpi_abis.py lists exactly the shipped modules;
that _core.pyi and py.typed are present.
run-tests.sh / test-wheel-mpi.sh run the serial suite, then the MPI suite against each MPI from PyPI.
CI
New test-wheels deploy job, which also gates publishing. It covers:
the version floors: Ubuntu 22.04's Open MPI 4.1.2 and MPICH 4.0, each with source-built and PyPI mpi4py, and impi-rt==2021.1.1;
the latest Intel MPI;
Homebrew Open MPI, including the C++ consumer.
For the version-floor jobs:
the setup action applies mpi4py's documented libmpi.so.12 link for Ubuntu 22.04's MPICH, whose library is named libmpich.so.12;
test-wheel-mpi.sh puts impi-rt 2021.1's libfabric on the loader path, because that release's libmpi.so.12 has no RUNPATH.
Deploy PR triggers now also cover the wheel-only files.
The setup action gains mpi: mpich and build-deps inputs.
The post-build link check skips HPE's documentation host, whose certificate chain lychee rejects.
Dev:
New recipes just test-wheel and just inspect-mpi. The latter configures a small CMake project (cpp/tests/cmake/inspect_mpi/), because try_compile can't run in script mode.
just test-find-package adds an MPI leg and a check that an ABI mismatch fails at configure time.
The Nix dev shell puts Open MPI on the loader path.
Docs: README, getting-started, building (COMPONENTS MPI migration, release-wheel reproduction), parallelism (backend selection, supported versions, getting an MPI, the Ubuntu 22.04 and HPE Cray notes), and testing (testing release wheels). The docs point users first to the MPI their system provides, and mention the PyPI MPI wheels only as a first-try option, with mpi4py's production caveat.
Verification so far
Locally (Nix, Open MPI 5.0.11):
serial and MPI Python and C++ suites;
the mpi marker suite at 1, 2 and 4 ranks;
the find_package consumer, serial and MPI on 2 ranks.
just inspect-mpi with the try_compile probe identifies MPICH 5.0.2 and Open MPI 5.0.11 correctly, and MPICH's standard-ABI mode as mpiabi;
a CIBUILDWHEEL=1 wheel build against both MPI prefixes produces both variants and _core.pyi.
Local docker cibuildwheel (cp312, manylinux x86_64, before the review rounds):
both variants built and the audit found 0 issues;
the serial suite and both PyPI-MPI suites passed.
CI:
the wheel builds passed on linux-intel, linux-arm and macOS-arm, with abi3audit and check_wheel.py;
in test-wheels, the Open MPI 4.1 jobs (source and PyPI mpi4py) and latest Intel MPI passed;
Homebrew Open MPI, MPICH 4.0 (both mpi4py variants) and Intel MPI 2021.1 failed, and 43d6204e fixes them. Their rerun is pending.

Walkthrough
The pull request adds MPI ABI inspection, serial and ABI-specific MPI builds, and communicator-based backend selection. It updates CMake package consumption and adds wheel production, auditing, and MPI testing before publishing. It also updates setup tools, tests, and documentation.
Changes: MPI ABI Backends and Wheel Support
Layer / File(s)
Summary
MPI ABI inspection and configuration CMakeLists.txt, cmake/custom/monopropMPI*.cmake, cmake/_mpi_abis.py.in, pyproject.toml, cpp/tests/cmake/*, justfile
CMake detects MPI ABI families and vendor versions, validates MPI prefixes, and generates Python ABI metadata. The build configuration adds the monoprop.mpi-abis setting and MPI inspection tests.
Serial and MPI core variants cmake/custom/monopropCore.cmake, cpp/monoprop/*, cpp/monoprop/detail/*/CMakeLists.txt, src/monoprop/bindings/*
Core sources are registered for serial and ABI-specific builds. The C++ and Python builds create serial and MPI variants with separate communicator bridges.
Dispatch passes the optional communicator to backend selection. The backend checks MPI availability, ABI, and version before loading an MPI extension. Tests cover backend selection, error cases, and serial/MPI behavior.
The CMake package validates the consumer’s MPI ABI when the MPI component is requested and exposes monoprop::monoprop_mpi for a matching ABI. Consumer smoke tests cover serial and MPI configurations.
Wheel production and validation .github/actions/setup/action.yml, .github/workflows/deploy.yml, pyproject.toml, tools/cibw/*, tools/packages/*, tests/test_check_wheel.py, justfile
Wheel builds configure MPICH and Open MPI variants. Repair and audit scripts check wheel binaries and metadata. CI tests wheels across MPI configurations before allowing PyPI and release asset uploads.
Test and benchmark helpers use MPI_ABIS to determine backend availability. Documentation describes MPI wheel installation, communicator use, source builds, testing, and CMake consumption.
The MPI test setup creates per-rank temp directories without checking who owns the parent. This could matter on shared multi-user machines, but it affects only test runs, not shipped wheels. Add an ownership and permission check before merging, or accept the risk for single-user environments.

in the tests: when we create fixtures returning MPI.COMM_SELF or MPI.COMM_WORLD should we duplicate the communicator? Should the scope of such fixtures be raised?
…mmunicator
Every build ships a serial _core; MPI builds add _core_mpi.<abi> in a separate nanobind domain. monoprop._backend serves comm=None from _core and loads the MPI module matching mpi4py's ABI family on first use, after checking mpi4py.MPI.get_vendor() against monoprop's version floors. libmonoprop is serial in every build.
BREAKING CHANGE: comm=None now always runs serially; MPI builds no longer fall back to MPI_COMM_WORLD. In MPI builds, monoprop::monoprop is serial until the MPI component lands.

…omponent
Each MPI ABI family gets libmonoprop_mpi_<abi>; find_package(monoprop COMPONENTS MPI) classifies the consumer's mpi.h and provides monoprop::monoprop_mpi, or fails naming the ABI.
BREAKING CHANGE: monoprop::monoprop is serial in every build; MPI consumers use COMPONENTS MPI and monoprop::monoprop_mpi.
Assisted-by: Pi:claude-opus-5-5
monoprop.mpi-abis takes <abi>=<prefix> entries and builds each variant against that prefix without compiler wrappers, checking the prefix's mpi.h matches the declared ABI. Under cibuildwheel the extensions drop build-machine RPATHs; macOS MPI binaries search the usual MPI prefixes.
Assisted-by: Pi:claude-opus-5-5
cibuildwheel builds _core_mpi.mpich and _core_mpi.openmpi against the PyPI mpich 5.0.2 and openmpi 5.0.11 packages, keeps MPI out of the repaired wheel, audits it with check_wheel.py, and runs the MPI suite against each PyPI MPI.
Assisted-by: Pi:claude-opus-5-5
…w MPI
A test-wheels job installs the wheels next to the supported version floors (Ubuntu 22.04's Open MPI 4.1.2 and MPICH 4.0 with source-built and PyPI mpi4py, Intel MPI 2021.1.1), the latest Intel MPI and Homebrew Open MPI, runs configure's MPI inspection on the floor headers, the MPI suite and a C++ consumer, and gates publishing.
Assisted-by: Pi:claude-opus-5-5
delocate cannot resolve the deliberately unresolved @rpath MPI libraries, so macOS repair now ignores missing dependencies; check_wheel.py still verifies each MPI binary's MPI dependency. The Linux before-all refreshes the loader cache after installing hwloc, because install-time stub generation imports _core without build RPATHs; check_wheel.py now requires _core.pyi and py.typed so a failed stub generation fails the build.
Assisted-by: Pi:claude-opus-5-5
…two MPI modes
The MPI inspection compiles a probe with try_compile and reads the macro values back with file(STRINGS), as FindMPI does for MPI_VERSION, instead of running the compiler's preprocessor by hand; try_compile carries the toolchain's flags and the macOS sysroot. just inspect-mpi becomes a small project because try_compile cannot run in script mode. monopropMPI.cmake names its two modes (prefixes for wheels, FindMPI for source builds) and now owns the macOS MPI RPATH list; the CIBUILDWHEEL uv cache key goes, since only uv build sees it.
Assisted-by: Pi:claude-opus-5-5
The wheels' MPI docs and README now lead with the MPI the system provides and link mpi4py's installation guide, keep the PyPI MPI wheels as a first-try option with mpi4py's production caveat, add the Ubuntu 22.04 libmpich.so.12 note, and reduce the Cray advice to what mpi4py documents. Also rewords the backend module docstring, applies review wording suggestions, and turns the compile-twice note into a callout.
Assisted-by: Pi:claude-opus-5-5
…s in wheel tests
delocate strips absolute RPATHs by default, which removed the Homebrew, MacPorts and /usr/local MPI search directories from the macOS MPI binaries; repair now passes --no-sanitize-rpaths and check_wheel.py requires those directories on every macOS MPI binary. For the floor-version wheel tests: the setup action applies mpi4py's documented libmpi.so.12 link for Ubuntu 22.04's MPICH, and test-wheel-mpi.sh puts impi-rt 2021.1's libfabric on the loader path as Intel's vars script does, since that release's libmpi.so.12 has no RUNPATH. The post-build link check skips HPE's documentation host, whose incomplete certificate chain lychee rejects.
Assisted-by: Pi:claude-opus-5-5
find_dependency forwards the consumer's REQUIRED, so find_package(monoprop REQUIRED OPTIONAL_COMPONENTS MPI) failed the whole package when no MPI was found. An optional request now looks MPI up quietly and only leaves monoprop_MPI_FOUND false, so the serial target stays usable; just test-find-package covers it with CMAKE_DISABLE_FIND_PACKAGE_MPI. test-wheel-mpi.sh also removes the temporary venv it creates when MONOPROP_TEST_VENV is unset. Both found by CodeRabbit.

Validate ownership of the per-user temporary directory.
On a shared temporary root, another user can pre-create pytest-of-<user> as a writable directory. mkdir(exist_ok=True) accepts it. That user can then replace a rank directory and interfere with files written by tmp_path. Pytest checks ownership and restricts permissions for its default per-user root, but assigning --basetemp bypasses that check. Reject an unowned parent and restrict its permissions before assigning the basetemp. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

## Summary
This follow-up to #426 answers a question from its review: should the
test fixtures that return `MPI.COMM_SELF` / `MPI.COMM_WORLD` duplicate
the communicator, and should their scope be raised?
monoprop sends its point-to-point messages on fixed tags
(`0x6D70`–`0x6D74`, in `Pairwise.h`) directly on the communicator the
caller passes in. Each exchange completes within a single monoprop call,
so a collision needs the caller to have their own point-to-point traffic
in flight on the same communicator during that call. That hazard is
narrow, so this PR documents the contract: callers should pass a
duplicate. The library does not duplicate on the caller's behalf. The
test suite follows the same advice.
An earlier revision duplicated inside the library. That needed an owner
shared by copies and functionals, plus a guard against freeing after
`MPI_Finalize`, which was too much machinery for the risk. It was
dropped in favour of the documented contract, and the library code is
unchanged from the base.
**Stacked on #426** (`feat/mpi-wheels`).
## Changes
- **Docs:**
- The multi-node example in `parallelism.mdx` passes
`MPI.COMM_WORLD.Dup()` and frees it once the propagator is no longer
used.
- A short paragraph explains why: monoprop's fixed tags could otherwise
match the caller's messages.
- The `comm` docstrings of `MajoranaPropagator`, `PauliPropagator` and
`MonomialPropagator` say the same.
- **Tests:**
- `conftest.py` adds session-scoped `comm_self` / `comm_world` fixtures:
duplicates created on first use and freed at session teardown. `comm`
and `serial_comm` hand those out instead of the predefined handles.
- Duplicating per test would add a collective to every test for no extra
isolation.
- The fixtures are typed `Intracomm | None` instead of `Any`.
- `SERIAL_COMM` is removed from `tests/mpi_support.py`.
**Verification (local, Open MPI 5.0.11):**
- With MPI enabled:
- Python: 745 passed.
- C++: 352 serial tests and 2 under MPI.
- The `mpi` marker suite passes at 1, 2 and 4 ranks.
- Without MPI:
- Python: 727 passed.
- C++: 324 passed.
- prek is clean.

…penMP refactor
Bring in main since 794f239: MPI-enabled wheels across MPI ABI families (#426), named build
options (#421), meaningful MPI tests in every configuration (#431), the partition barrier fix
(#433), the HPC container image (#418), Python 3.15 (#395), pytest-mpi removal (#415), workflow
token permissions (#422) and dependency bumps.
- CMake: the core is compiled once per MPI ABI (monoprop_add_core_sources/_objects). OpenMP is
linked on monoprop-core-usage, monoprop and every monoprop_mpi_<abi>; hwloc is dropped from the
core and MPI libraries. The sharded, parallel and evolution sources register through the new
function, and the MPI failure driver links monoprop_CPP_TEST_OBJS.
- PartitionBarrier.h, PartitionGroup.h, the partition CMakeLists and the ShmComm/HybridComm tests
stay deleted, with main's hybrid-partition equivalence case.
- monoprop::monoprop is always serial: the link probe expects no MPI there and builds again,
expecting MPI, against every monoprop_mpi_<abi>; its two-rank T = 1/2 launches run the test
ABI. find_package_smoke reads the expectation from monoprop_SMOKE_MPI, and test-find-package
runs the MPI component on two ranks at T = 1 and 2.
- monoprop.has_mpi is gone on main: tests, probes and check-runtime read monoprop.MPI_ABIS, and
check-runtime also scans every _core_mpi file. The benchmark tooling keeps its has_mpi record
key, reads the build mode through preflight.build_has_mpi() (legacy builds included) and
hashes the extension it measures (preflight.measured_extension(): _core_mpi on a
communicator).
- comm=None now runs serially, so the sharded probe passes MPI.COMM_WORLD explicitly in an MPI
build, to its propagators and to the low-level controls.
- tests/mpi_support.py imports mpi4py only when MPI_ABIS is non-empty, so an MPI-off run never
initializes MPI.
- The ranks2-partitions2 Python MPI leg becomes ranks2-threads2 (monoprop_NUM_THREADS=2), and the
graph memory test runs at monoprop_NUM_THREADS=1 and 2 instead of monoprop_PARTITIONS.
- CI and wheels: libomp/OpenMP_ROOT alongside main's MPI wheel settings, the TSan job through
monoprop_SANITIZER, and no ldconfig step for hwloc on Linux.
- Docs: the MareNostrum5 guide places the OpenMP team with OMP_PLACES/OMP_PROC_BIND instead of
monoprop pinning partitions; building, testing and benchmarks follow the backend split. The
container keeps libhwloc-dev, which its PMIx and Open MPI builds need.
MPI-off Release: ctest 517/517, pytest 984 passed. MPI (Open MPI 5.0.11): ctest 526 serial and
49 MPI, pytest 1010 passed plus the sharded probe files, all five Python MPI legs, and
test-find-package with the MPI component. prek is clean.

Summary
This PR publishes MPI-enabled
monopropwheels that work with the MPI library already installed on the user's machine. They don't bundle MPI, and they don't require the MPI-5 standard ABI. The approach follows mpi4py's wheels (cibw/,_mpiabi.py). We build one extension per MPI ABI family, identified by the library's soname:mpich(libmpi.so.12): MPICH, Intel MPI, MVAPICH and Cray MPICH.openmpi(libmpi.so.40).mpiabi(libmpi_abi.so.1): built and tested locally, not shipped yet. It is waiting for an mpi4py release that uses it.monoprop loads the variant matching the family mpi4py is using.
How it works at runtime. Every build ships a serial
monoprop._core. MPI builds addmonoprop._core_mpi.<abi>, in a separate nanobind domain.comm=Nonealways runs serially. Importingmonopropnever imports mpi4py or initializes MPI.C++ SDK. The SDK in the wheel gains
libmonoprop_mpi_<abi>.find_package(monoprop CONFIG COMPONENTS MPI)selects it to match the consumer's MPI. WithOPTIONAL_COMPONENTS MPI, a consumer without MPI, or with an MPI of another ABI family, still gets the serialmonoprop::monoprop.Design spec and implementation plan:
docs/superpowers/specs/2026-10-23-mpi-wheels-design.mdanddocs/superpowers/plans/2026-10-23-mpi-wheels.md. They are not part of this PR and can be shared on request.Stacked on #421. The base branch is
feat/scikit-build-config-settings. Follow-up #430, stacked on this PR, makes each propagator run on a private duplicate of its communicator.Breaking changes:
monoprop.has_mpiis removed. Usebool(monoprop.MPI_ABIS).comm=Nonenow always runs serially. MPI builds used to fall back toMPI_COMM_WORLD.monoprop::monopropis serial in every build. MPI C++ consumers useCOMPONENTS MPIandmonoprop::monoprop_mpi.Changes
cmake/custom/monopropCore.cmake).cmake/custom/monopropMPIABI.cmakereads the ABI family and vendor version from thempi.hmacros and enforces the minimum versions. A probe is compiled withtry_compile, never linked or run, and the values are read back withfile(STRINGS), as FindMPI does forMPI_VERSION. The file is installed for consumers too.cmake/custom/monopropMPI.cmakehas two modes:monoprop.mpi-abis<abi>=<prefix>entries build one variant per prefix (wheel builds), and otherwise FindMPI provides one variant (source builds).CIBUILDWHEEL=1, the wheel keeps no RPATHs from the build machine. On macOS, the MPI binaries search the usual MPI locations instead (/usr/local/lib,/opt/homebrew/lib,/opt/local/lib), as mpi4py's wheels do.comm_serial.cppandcomm_mpi.cpp, sobindings.cpp.inno longer needs#ifdefs.monoprop_add_python_corebuilds_coreand_core_mpi.<abi>.monoprop._backend(core_module,detect_mpi4py_abi,check_mpi_version) and the publicmonoprop.MPI_ABIS.MPIUnavailableError,MPIAbiMismatchError,MPIVersionError.core_module(comm).tools/cibw/install-mpi.shinstalls PyPImpich==5.0.2andopenmpi==5.0.11to build against. On Linux,ldconfigruns after the build dependencies are installed, so stub generation can load_corewithout build RPATHs.repair-wheel.shexcludes MPI from auditwheel/delocate, then runscheck_wheel.py. On macOS, delocate runs with--ignore-missing-dependencies, because the MPI libraries are deliberately unresolved at repair time, and with--no-sanitize-rpaths, which keeps the MPI search directories.check_wheel.pyaudits, for each variant:_mpi_abis.pylists exactly the shipped modules;_core.pyiandpy.typedare present.run-tests.sh/test-wheel-mpi.shrun the serial suite, then the MPI suite against each MPI from PyPI.test-wheelsdeploy job, which also gates publishing. It covers:impi-rt==2021.1.1;libmpi.so.12link for Ubuntu 22.04's MPICH, whose library is namedlibmpich.so.12;test-wheel-mpi.shputsimpi-rt2021.1's libfabric on the loader path, because that release'slibmpi.so.12has no RUNPATH.mpi: mpichandbuild-depsinputs.just test-wheelandjust inspect-mpi. The latter configures a small CMake project (cpp/tests/cmake/inspect_mpi/), becausetry_compilecan't run in script mode.just test-find-packageadds an MPI leg and a check that an ABI mismatch fails at configure time.getting-started,building(COMPONENTS MPImigration, release-wheel reproduction),parallelism(backend selection, supported versions, getting an MPI, the Ubuntu 22.04 and HPE Cray notes), andtesting(testing release wheels). The docs point users first to the MPI their system provides, and mention the PyPI MPI wheels only as a first-try option, with mpi4py's production caveat.Verification so far
mpimarker suite at 1, 2 and 4 ranks;find_packageconsumer, serial and MPI on 2 ranks.just inspect-mpiwith thetry_compileprobe identifies MPICH 5.0.2 and Open MPI 5.0.11 correctly, and MPICH's standard-ABI mode asmpiabi;CIBUILDWHEEL=1wheel build against both MPI prefixes produces both variants and_core.pyi.check_wheel.py;test-wheels, the Open MPI 4.1 jobs (source and PyPI mpi4py) and latest Intel MPI passed;43d6204efixes them.
