docs(mpi): 📝 ask callers to pass a duplicated communicator - #430
This follow-up to #426 answers a question from its review: should the test fixtures that return MPI.COMM_SELF / MPI.COMM_WORLD duplicate the communicator, and should their scope be raised?
monoprop sends its point-to-point messages on fixed tags (0x6D70–0x6D74, in Pairwise.h) directly on the communicator the caller passes in. Each exchange completes within a single monoprop call, so a collision needs the caller to have their own point-to-point traffic in flight on the same communicator during that call. That hazard is narrow, so this PR documents the contract: callers should pass a duplicate. The library does not duplicate on the caller's behalf. The test suite follows the same advice.
An earlier revision duplicated inside the library. That needed an owner shared by copies and functionals, plus a guard against freeing after MPI_Finalize, which was too much machinery for the risk. It was dropped in favour of the documented contract, and the library code is unchanged from the base.
The multi-node example in parallelism.mdx passes MPI.COMM_WORLD.Dup() and frees it once the propagator is no longer used.
A short paragraph explains why: monoprop's fixed tags could otherwise match the caller's messages.
The comm docstrings of MajoranaPropagator, PauliPropagator and MonomialPropagator say the same.
Tests:
conftest.py adds session-scoped comm_self / comm_world fixtures: duplicates created on first use and freed at session teardown. comm and serial_comm hand those out instead of the predefined handles.
Duplicating per test would add a collective to every test for no extra isolation.
The fixtures are typed Intracomm | None instead of Any.
SERIAL_COMM is removed from tests/mpi_support.py.
Verification (local, Open MPI 5.0.11):
With MPI enabled:
Python: 745 passed.
C++: 352 serial tests and 2 under MPI.
The mpi marker suite passes at 1, 2 and 4 ranks.
Without MPI:
Python: 727 passed.
C++: 324 passed.
prek is clean.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Documentation
Updated the MPI example to use a separate communicator and keep it available until the propagator and its functionals are no longer in use.
Clarified that supplied communicators must outlive the simulator and should be dedicated to monoprop communication. Fixed-tag messages can otherwise match application traffic on the same communicator, including wildcard receives.
Added guidance for configuring propagators with a duplicate communicator.

Walkthrough
The changes document MPI communicator lifetime and fixed-tag message matching. The example and test fixtures use duplicated communicators. Rank-specific temporary-directory setup now checks ownership, rejects symbolic links, and restricts permissions.
Changes: MPI communicator isolation and test setup
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Communicator isolation and lifetime guidance src/monoprop/majorana_propagator.py, src/monoprop/monomial_propagator.py, src/monoprop/pauli_propagator.py, docs/content/docs/features/parallelism.mdx
The propagator documentation describes how fixed-tag messages can match application traffic on the same communicator and recommends a dedicated duplicate. The example duplicates MPI.COMM_WORLD and frees it after the propagator and its functionals are no longer used.
Duplicated MPI test communicators tests/conftest.py, tests/mpi_support.py, tests/test_evolved_operator_coefficients.py
Session-scoped fixtures duplicate and free COMM_SELF and COMM_WORLD when the MPI backend is available. Tests use the comm_self fixture instead of SERIAL_COMM.
Temporary-directory setup rejects symbolic links and directories owned by another user, and sets permissions to 0o700. Tests cover these checks and permission changes.
Algorithmiq/monoprop#426: Adds caller-supplied MPI communicators and documents fixed-tag point-to-point messaging.
Algorithmiq/monoprop#431: Uses the duplicated comm_world fixture and continues the communicator guidance and MPI test changes.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 02e64
This change mainly documents that callers should pass a duplicated MPI communicator and updates the test fixtures to do so. Library code is unchanged. The new POSIX-specific tests would fail if the suite were run natively on Windows, which CI does not cover. This is a small follow-up rather than a merge blocker.

## Summary
This PR publishes MPI-enabled `monoprop` wheels that work with the MPI
library already installed on the user's machine. They don't bundle MPI,
and they don't require the MPI-5 standard ABI. The approach follows
mpi4py's wheels (`cibw/`, `_mpiabi.py`). We build one extension per MPI
ABI family, identified by the library's soname:
- **`mpich`** (`libmpi.so.12`): MPICH, Intel MPI, MVAPICH and Cray
MPICH.
- **`openmpi`** (`libmpi.so.40`).
- **`mpiabi`** (`libmpi_abi.so.1`): built and tested locally, not
shipped yet. It is waiting for an mpi4py release that uses it.
monoprop loads the variant matching the family mpi4py is using.
**How it works at runtime.** Every build ships a serial
`monoprop._core`. MPI builds add `monoprop._core_mpi.<abi>`, in a
separate nanobind domain.
- A propagator built with `comm=None` always runs serially. Importing
`monoprop` never imports mpi4py or initializes MPI.
- Passing an mpi4py communicator loads the matching MPI module on first
use. Before loading, monoprop checks the ABI family (from mpi4py's wheel
file name, or from the library otherwise) and the MPI version.
- Each implementation has a minimum version: Open MPI 4.1, MPICH 4.0,
Intel MPI 2021.0, MVAPICH 3.0, Cray MPICH 8.1. Configure-time and
runtime checks both enforce it. An implementation not in that list only
gets a warning.
**C++ SDK.** The SDK in the wheel gains `libmonoprop_mpi_<abi>`.
`find_package(monoprop CONFIG COMPONENTS MPI)` selects it to match the
consumer's MPI. With `OPTIONAL_COMPONENTS MPI`, a consumer without MPI,
or with an MPI of another ABI family, still gets the serial
`monoprop::monoprop`.
Design spec and implementation plan:
`docs/superpowers/specs/2026-10-23-mpi-wheels-design.md` and
`docs/superpowers/plans/2026-10-23-mpi-wheels.md`. They are not part of
this PR and can be shared on request.
**Stacked on #421.** The base branch is
`feat/scikit-build-config-settings`. Follow-up #430, stacked on this PR,
makes each propagator run on a private duplicate of its communicator.
**Breaking changes:**
- `monoprop.has_mpi` is removed. Use `bool(monoprop.MPI_ABIS)`.
- `comm=None` now always runs serially. MPI builds used to fall back to
`MPI_COMM_WORLD`.
- `monoprop::monoprop` is serial in every build. MPI C++ consumers use
`COMPONENTS MPI` and `monoprop::monoprop_mpi`.
## Changes
- **CMake**
- Core sources are compiled once per variant
(`cmake/custom/monopropCore.cmake`).
- `cmake/custom/monopropMPIABI.cmake` reads the ABI family and vendor
version from the `mpi.h` macros and enforces the minimum versions. A
probe is compiled with `try_compile`, never linked or run, and the
values are read back with `file(STRINGS)`, as FindMPI does for
`MPI_VERSION`. The file is installed for consumers too.
- `cmake/custom/monopropMPI.cmake` has two modes: `monoprop.mpi-abis`
`<abi>=<prefix>` entries build one variant per prefix (wheel builds),
and otherwise FindMPI provides one variant (source builds).
- Under `CIBUILDWHEEL=1`, the wheel keeps no RPATHs from the build
machine. On macOS, the MPI binaries search the usual MPI locations
instead (`/usr/local/lib`, `/opt/homebrew/lib`, `/opt/local/lib`), as
mpi4py's wheels do.
- **Bindings:** the comm bridge is split into `comm_serial.cpp` and
`comm_mpi.cpp`, so `bindings.cpp.in` no longer needs `#ifdef`s.
`monoprop_add_python_core` builds `_core` and `_core_mpi.<abi>`.
- **Python**
- New `monoprop._backend` (`core_module`, `detect_mpi4py_abi`,
`check_mpi_version`) and the public `monoprop.MPI_ABIS`.
- New errors: `MPIUnavailableError`, `MPIAbiMismatchError`,
`MPIVersionError`.
- Dispatch now goes through `core_module(comm)`.
- **Wheels**
- `tools/cibw/install-mpi.sh` installs PyPI `mpich==5.0.2` and
`openmpi==5.0.11` to build against. On Linux, `ldconfig` runs after the
build dependencies are installed, so stub generation can load `_core`
without build RPATHs.
- `repair-wheel.sh` excludes MPI from auditwheel/delocate, then runs
`check_wheel.py`. On macOS, delocate runs with
`--ignore-missing-dependencies`, because the MPI libraries are
deliberately unresolved at repair time, and with `--no-sanitize-rpaths`,
which keeps the MPI search directories.
- `check_wheel.py` audits, for each variant:
- the MPI linkage;
- the RPATHs: no empty or absolute entries, and every macOS MPI binary
keeps the MPI search directories;
- that no MPI library is bundled;
- that `_mpi_abis.py` lists exactly the shipped modules;
- that `_core.pyi` and `py.typed` are present.
- `run-tests.sh` / `test-wheel-mpi.sh` run the serial suite, then the
MPI suite against each MPI from PyPI.
- **CI**
- New `test-wheels` deploy job, which also gates publishing. It covers:
- the version floors: Ubuntu 22.04's Open MPI 4.1.2 and MPICH 4.0, each
with source-built and PyPI mpi4py, and `impi-rt==2021.1.1`;
- the latest Intel MPI;
- Homebrew Open MPI, including the C++ consumer.
- For the version-floor jobs:
- the setup action applies mpi4py's documented `libmpi.so.12` link for
Ubuntu 22.04's MPICH, whose library is named `libmpich.so.12`;
- `test-wheel-mpi.sh` puts `impi-rt` 2021.1's libfabric on the loader
path, because that release's `libmpi.so.12` has no RUNPATH.
- Deploy PR triggers now also cover the wheel-only files.
- The setup action gains `mpi: mpich` and `build-deps` inputs.
- The post-build link check skips HPE's documentation host, whose
certificate chain lychee rejects.
- **Dev:**
- New recipes `just test-wheel` and `just inspect-mpi`. The latter
configures a small CMake project (`cpp/tests/cmake/inspect_mpi/`),
because `try_compile` can't run in script mode.
- `just test-find-package` adds an MPI leg and a check that an ABI
mismatch fails at configure time.
- The Nix dev shell puts Open MPI on the loader path.
- **Docs:** README, `getting-started`, `building` (`COMPONENTS MPI`
migration, release-wheel reproduction), `parallelism` (backend
selection, supported versions, getting an MPI, the Ubuntu 22.04 and HPE
Cray notes), and `testing` (testing release wheels). The docs point
users first to the MPI their system provides, and mention the PyPI MPI
wheels only as a first-try option, with mpi4py's production caveat.
**Verification so far**
- **Locally (Nix, Open MPI 5.0.11):**
- serial and MPI Python and C++ suites;
- the `mpi` marker suite at 1, 2 and 4 ranks;
- the `find_package` consumer, serial and MPI on 2 ranks.
- `just inspect-mpi` with the `try_compile` probe identifies MPICH 5.0.2
and Open MPI 5.0.11 correctly, and MPICH's standard-ABI mode as
`mpiabi`;
- a `CIBUILDWHEEL=1` wheel build against both MPI prefixes produces both
variants and `_core.pyi`.
- **Local docker cibuildwheel (cp312, manylinux x86_64, before the
review rounds):**
- both variants built and the audit found 0 issues;
- the serial suite and both PyPI-MPI suites passed.
- **CI:**
- the wheel builds passed on linux-intel, linux-arm and macOS-arm, with
abi3audit and `check_wheel.py`;
- in `test-wheels`, the Open MPI 4.1 jobs (source and PyPI mpi4py) and
latest Intel MPI passed;
- Homebrew Open MPI, MPICH 4.0 (both mpi4py variants) and Intel MPI
2021.1 failed, and `43d6204e` fixes them. Their rerun is pending.

monoprop exchanged point-to-point messages on fixed tags directly on the caller's communicator, so the caller's own messages on those tags could match ours. A propagator built over an MPI communicator now duplicates it once (collectively, during construction), runs all internal traffic on the duplicate, and frees it with the last copy of the propagator; copies and functionals share the duplicate, and the free is skipped after MPI_Finalize. The test suite's communicator fixtures hand out session-scoped duplicates of COMM_SELF and COMM_WORLD instead of the predefined handles.

…t passing a duplicate
Duplicating the caller's communicator inside the library needed an owner
shared by copies and functionals, and a guard against freeing after
MPI_Finalize. That is too much machinery for a narrow hazard: monoprop's
fixed-tag point-to-point exchanges complete within each call, so they can
only match a caller's messages that are in flight on the same communicator.
Document instead that callers should pass a duplicate, as the test
fixtures do. Rename the session-scoped fixtures to comm_self/comm_world
and type them as Intracomm | None.
Assisted-by: Pi:claude-opus-5-5
A functional holds the propagator's communicator handle, so the duplicate must outlive every functional, not just the propagator.
Assisted-by: Pi:claude-opus-5-5
…trols
The per-rank --basetemp skips the checks pytest applies to its own pytest-of-<user> directory. On a shared temporary root another user could create that predictable name first and tamper with the tests' files. The parent is now refused when it is a symbolic link or not owned by the current user, and made private (0700) otherwise, as pytest does. Follows up #426, found by CodeRabbit after it merged.
Assisted-by: Pi:claude-opus-5-5
…receives too
A receive with MPI.ANY_TAG on the same communicator can take one of monoprop's point-to-point messages, not only the caller's sends can collide. The comm docstrings and the parallelism guide now ask for a duplicate reserved for monoprop. Found by CodeRabbit.

…iguration (#431)
🤖 _AI text below_ 🤖
## Summary
Several MPI tests checked nothing, and CI never reached some supported
configurations. This PR makes the tests meaningful and runs them where
it matters. Stacked on #430.
What was wrong:
- CTest's name filter dropped `operator_index_term_index_is_32_bit`.
- 35 C++ cases returned early on too few ranks and counted as passes.
- The serial-vs-distributed C++ tests compared `0.0` with `0.0`:
`random_exact`'s observable terms all have length ≥ 10, so a cutoff of 4
removed them.
- CI only ran 2 and 4 ranks, so the `splitmix` / dense all-to-all path,
other rank counts and ranks × partitions never ran.
- The Python MPI step ran the whole suite twice on 2 ranks, and most of
it was serial work.
- A rank other than 0 could fail with no output.
- Ranks raced on pytest's shared temporary directories.
## Changes
- **CTest**
- Registers every case. The filter now skips indented children instead
of names matching `_[0-9]+`.
- Serial entries report Boost precondition skips as CTest skips.
- MPI entries carry their own oversubscription settings.
- New `monoprop_ROUTING=splitmix` entries run at 2, 3 and 4 ranks, next
to the linear ones at 2 and 4.
- **C++ tests**
- `cpp/tests/RankPreconditions.h` replaces the early returns with
preconditions (`min_ranks`, `power_of_two_ranks`, `even_ranks`,
`linear_routing`, `default_routing`).
- The equivalence tests use cutoff 10, and guard against a reference
that is zero or exact.
- New test: linear routing refuses a 3-rank communicator.
- **Python tests**
- `comm` is `None` (serial) or a duplicate of `COMM_WORLD`, marked
`mpi`. `COMM_SELF` is gone except in `tests/test_mpi_backend.py`.
- `test_monoprop_mpi.py` compares truncated Majorana and Pauli runs
(Heisenberg and Schrödinger), re-weighting, and the 3-rank refusal
against the serial run.
- Failures on ranks other than 0 are printed to stderr.
- Each rank gets its own `--basetemp`.
- The exact partition-ratio check replaces the stale "MPI gate" comment.
- **Recipes and CI**
- `just test-py-mpi` runs the `-m mpi` tests in five configurations: 1,
2 and 4 ranks; 3 ranks with splitmix; 2 ranks × 2 partitions.
- Tests time out after 300 s (`pytest-timeout`), and the CI job after 60
minutes.
- `just test-mpi` matches CI.
- The Python MPI JUnit reports are uploaded to Codecov.
- **Docs**
- `parallelism.mdx`: the `MPI.COMM_SELF` section is replaced by one on
`comm=None`.
- `testing.mdx` and `cpp/tests/README.md` describe the new
configurations.
Verified locally (Open MPI 5, 16 cores):

## Summary by CodeRabbit
* **Documentation**
* Updated parallelism guidance to recommend duplicating the MPI world
communicator and using the serial backend by omitting the communicator
or passing `None`.
* Expanded testing guidance with MPI rank configurations, linear and
splitmix routing options, rank requirements, and updated test commands.
* **Tests**
* Expanded MPI test coverage across rank counts, routing modes, and
partition configurations.
* Added timeouts and rank-specific failure reporting for MPI test runs.
* Tests requiring specific MPI configurations are skipped when those
requirements are not met.

Summary
This follow-up to #426 answers a question from its review: should the test fixtures that return
MPI.COMM_SELF/MPI.COMM_WORLDduplicate the communicator, and should their scope be raised?monoprop sends its point-to-point messages on fixed tags (
0x6D70–0x6D74, inPairwise.h) directly on the communicator the caller passes in. Each exchange completes within a single monoprop call, so a collision needs the caller to have their own point-to-point traffic in flight on the same communicator during that call. That hazard is narrow, so this PR documents the contract: callers should pass a duplicate. The library does not duplicate on the caller's behalf. The test suite follows the same advice.An earlier revision duplicated inside the library. That needed an owner shared by copies and functionals, plus a guard against freeing after
MPI_Finalize, which was too much machinery for the risk. It was dropped in favour of the documented contract, and the library code is unchanged from the base.Stacked on #426 (
