test(mpi): ✅ make the MPI tests meaningful and run them in every configuration - #431
Several MPI tests checked nothing, and CI never reached some supported configurations. This PR makes the tests meaningful and runs them where it matters. Stacked on #430.
What was wrong:
CTest's name filter dropped operator_index_term_index_is_32_bit.
35 C++ cases returned early on too few ranks and counted as passes.
The serial-vs-distributed C++ tests compared 0.0 with 0.0: random_exact's observable terms all have length ≥ 10, so a cutoff of 4 removed them.
CI only ran 2 and 4 ranks, so the splitmix / dense all-to-all path, other rank counts and ranks × partitions never ran.
The Python MPI step ran the whole suite twice on 2 ranks, and most of it was serial work.
A rank other than 0 could fail with no output.
Ranks raced on pytest's shared temporary directories.
Changes
CTest
Registers every case. The filter now skips indented children instead of names matching _[0-9]+.
Serial entries report Boost precondition skips as CTest skips.
MPI entries carry their own oversubscription settings.
New monoprop_ROUTING=splitmix entries run at 2, 3 and 4 ranks, next to the linear ones at 2 and 4.
C++ tests
cpp/tests/RankPreconditions.h replaces the early returns with preconditions (min_ranks, power_of_two_ranks, even_ranks, linear_routing, default_routing).
The equivalence tests use cutoff 10, and guard against a reference that is zero or exact.
New test: linear routing refuses a 3-rank communicator.
Python tests
comm is None (serial) or a duplicate of COMM_WORLD, marked mpi. COMM_SELF is gone except in tests/test_mpi_backend.py.
test_monoprop_mpi.py compares truncated Majorana and Pauli runs (Heisenberg and Schrödinger), re-weighting, and the 3-rank refusal against the serial run.
Failures on ranks other than 0 are printed to stderr.
Each rank gets its own --basetemp.
The exact partition-ratio check replaces the stale "MPI gate" comment.
Recipes and CI
just test-py-mpi runs the -m mpi tests in five configurations: 1, 2 and 4 ranks; 3 ranks with splitmix; 2 ranks × 2 partitions.
Tests time out after 300 s (pytest-timeout), and the CI job after 60 minutes.
just test-mpi matches CI.
The Python MPI JUnit reports are uploaded to Codecov.
Docs
parallelism.mdx: the MPI.COMM_SELF section is replaced by one on comm=None.
testing.mdx and cpp/tests/README.md describe the new configurations.
Verified locally (Open MPI 5, 16 cores):
the five Python MPI configurations;
the five C++ MPI entries;
C++ serial: 354/354 with 36 skipped in the MPI tree, 325/325 with 9 skipped in the serial tree;
Python serial in both builds;
prek run --all-files.

Updated parallelism guidance to recommend duplicating the MPI world communicator and using the serial backend by omitting the communicator or passing None.
Expanded testing guidance with MPI rank configurations, linear and splitmix routing options, rank requirements, and updated test commands.
Tests
Expanded MPI test coverage across rank counts, routing modes, and partition configurations.
Added timeouts and rank-specific failure reporting for MPI test runs.
Tests requiring specific MPI configurations are skipped when those requirements are not met.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
This pull request revises C++ and Python MPI test setup, coverage, and execution. It adds splitmix C++ test variants and fixed Python MPI legs, changes communicator fixtures and rank-specific failure reporting, and updates related documentation and CI configuration.
Changes: MPI test infrastructure
Layer / File(s)
Summary
C++ rank preconditions and tests cpp/tests/RankPreconditions.h, cpp/tests/*tests.cpp, cpp/tests/mpi_*.cpp
C++ tests use rank-count and routing preconditions instead of in-test early returns. A new MPI test checks three-rank linear-routing geometry, and equivalence tests add reference-value checks.
C++ MPI test registration cpp/tests/boost-test.cmake, cpp/tests/boostAddTests.cmake, cpp/tests/README.md
CTest registration validates rank lists and adds separate linear and splitmix variants. Test discovery changes how Boost test names are parsed and serial skipped cases are recognized.
Python MPI fixture and reporting behavior tests/conftest.py, tests/test_mpi_configuration.py
The comm fixture provides serial and world communicator cases. Nonzero MPI ranks report failed test phases to stderr.
Serial test communicator migration tests/*, packages/monoprop-bench-tools/tests/*
Tests remove serial_comm use and rely on default communicator behavior or the updated comm fixture. The infinite-cutoff test no longer covers with_coeffs.
MPI commands and documentation .github/workflows/test.yml, justfile, docs/content/docs/*, README.md, pyproject.toml, tools/*
Test recipes define fixed Python MPI legs and run Python and C++ MPI suites. CI adds timeouts and MPI coverage uploads; documentation describes MPI configurations and communicator usage.

Pin ranks4 to linear routing.
If the caller inherits monoprop_ROUTING=splitmix, this leg passes that value to MPI. test_linear_routing_refuses_a_three_rank_communicator then skips instead of checking the linear refusal.

… of failed runs
The mpi-linear CTest variants now set monoprop_ROUTING=linear explicitly, so an inherited monoprop_ROUTING=splitmix can no longer run splitmix under the linear label. The Codecov test-results uploads run unless the job is cancelled, so a failing test step still reports the results it wrote. Both found by CodeRabbit.

… and fix the test docs
The Python MPI legs drop monoprop_ROUTING and monoprop_PARTITIONS inherited from the shell before applying their own, and ranks4 pins linear routing, so an inherited splitmix setting can no longer skip the three-rank refusal. The testing guide now rebuilds after changing the splitmix rank list (variants are registered when the test binary is built) and shows how to check them, runs the serial C++ group of an MPI build with monoprop_ENABLE_MPI=ON, and links evolved_operator. …r poison (#433)
🤖 _AI text below_ 🤖
Fixes#432
## Summary
Under the MPI hybrid transport (several ranks × several partitions per
rank), a call that should raise a Python exception could intermittently
kill the whole MPI job with `MPI_Abort`. #431's CI hit it in the
`ranks2-partitions2` leg, in
`test_heisenberg_absent_term_raises[comm_world]`.
**Root cause.** `PartitionBarrier::sync()` re-checked the poison flag
*after* its round had been released.
- In `term_expectation_values` for an absent term, every partition
throws right after the hybrid allreduce. If one sibling threw first, its
poison made a partition that had already *completed* the collective fail
it anyway with `ShmCommPoisoned`.
- On a single rank, `PartitionGroup::run_on_all` already reported the
real exception, which masked the problem.
- Under the hybrid, partition 0 runs inside `guard_partition0_`, which
turns any exception into `MPI_Abort`, by design, so that peer ranks
blocked in MPI don't hang.
Local reproduction: 2 ranks × 4 partitions on the whole
`test_term_expectation_values.py` file under CPU load failed 2/17 runs.
With `-s`, monoprop's abort message names the cause:
```
monoprop: rank 0 cannot complete the collective 'allreduce_sum_inplace'
(ShmComm poisoned: a peer partition threw during a collective) ...
MPI_ABORT was invoked on rank 0
```
**Fix.** `sync()` now throws only for a round that cannot complete.
- When a waiter sees poison, it re-reads the barrier generation before
failing.
- A poisoner that left the round saw the generation advance (acquire)
before it poisoned (release). So a waiter that observes the poison also
observes the advance, and a completed round is never failed.
- A failure still surfaces at the next round, because its poisoner never
arrives there.
- No collective in `HybridComm` or `ShmComm` reads a sibling's buffers
after its final barrier, so returning normally from a completed round is
safe.
## Changes
- `cpp/monoprop/detail/mpi/PartitionBarrier.h`: the last arriver returns
without checking poison, and a waiter that sees poison re-checks the
generation. Documented as the barrier's contract.
- `cpp/monoprop/detail/partition/PartitionGroup.h`: the `run_on_all`
comment no longer says that poison can reach a master whose collective
completed.
- `cpp/tests/shm_comm_tests.cpp`, two new cases, both failing before the
fix:
- `partition_barrier_completed_round_ignores_later_poison`:
deterministic, the last arriver of a poisoned round returns normally.
- `shm_comm_poison_after_completed_collective_spares_siblings`: 2000
repetitions of the real pattern on `ShmComm` (allreduce, then one
partition poisons), with no MPI, so a failure can't kill the runner.
Before the fix it failed within ~85–300 repetitions; after it, 5/5 runs
pass.
- `cpp/tests/term_expectation_values_tests.cpp`: comment updated to
point at the new test.
**Verification (local, Open MPI 5.0.11):**
- C++ serial 356/356 and MPI 5/5 variants.
- All five Python MPI legs (`just test-py-mpi`).
- The stress loop that reproduced the abort: 0/60 failures under load,
across 2×4, 2×2 and 4×2 ranks × partitions (2/17 before the fix).
- prek is clean.

…penMP refactor
Bring in main since 794f239: MPI-enabled wheels across MPI ABI families (#426), named build
options (#421), meaningful MPI tests in every configuration (#431), the partition barrier fix
(#433), the HPC container image (#418), Python 3.15 (#395), pytest-mpi removal (#415), workflow
token permissions (#422) and dependency bumps.
- CMake: the core is compiled once per MPI ABI (monoprop_add_core_sources/_objects). OpenMP is
linked on monoprop-core-usage, monoprop and every monoprop_mpi_<abi>; hwloc is dropped from the
core and MPI libraries. The sharded, parallel and evolution sources register through the new
function, and the MPI failure driver links monoprop_CPP_TEST_OBJS.
- PartitionBarrier.h, PartitionGroup.h, the partition CMakeLists and the ShmComm/HybridComm tests
stay deleted, with main's hybrid-partition equivalence case.
- monoprop::monoprop is always serial: the link probe expects no MPI there and builds again,
expecting MPI, against every monoprop_mpi_<abi>; its two-rank T = 1/2 launches run the test
ABI. find_package_smoke reads the expectation from monoprop_SMOKE_MPI, and test-find-package
runs the MPI component on two ranks at T = 1 and 2.
- monoprop.has_mpi is gone on main: tests, probes and check-runtime read monoprop.MPI_ABIS, and
check-runtime also scans every _core_mpi file. The benchmark tooling keeps its has_mpi record
key, reads the build mode through preflight.build_has_mpi() (legacy builds included) and
hashes the extension it measures (preflight.measured_extension(): _core_mpi on a
communicator).
- comm=None now runs serially, so the sharded probe passes MPI.COMM_WORLD explicitly in an MPI
build, to its propagators and to the low-level controls.
- tests/mpi_support.py imports mpi4py only when MPI_ABIS is non-empty, so an MPI-off run never
initializes MPI.
- The ranks2-partitions2 Python MPI leg becomes ranks2-threads2 (monoprop_NUM_THREADS=2), and the
graph memory test runs at monoprop_NUM_THREADS=1 and 2 instead of monoprop_PARTITIONS.
- CI and wheels: libomp/OpenMP_ROOT alongside main's MPI wheel settings, the TSan job through
monoprop_SANITIZER, and no ldconfig step for hwloc on Linux.
- Docs: the MareNostrum5 guide places the OpenMP team with OMP_PLACES/OMP_PROC_BIND instead of
monoprop pinning partitions; building, testing and benchmarks follow the backend split. The
container keeps libhwloc-dev, which its PMIx and Open MPI builds need.
MPI-off Release: ctest 517/517, pytest 984 passed. MPI (Open MPI 5.0.11): ctest 526 serial and
49 MPI, pytest 1010 passed plus the sharded probe files, all five Python MPI legs, and
test-find-package with the MPI component. prek is clean.
