Spec 023 PR 2. PR 1 (#752) is merged, so this PR now targets master.

What changes

Spec 023 US1, tasks T014–T030: a PR now boots only the e2e suites that exercise what it changed, and only the tests inside them that do.

  • test/e2e/suite-components.json declares which components each e2e test exercises, keyed by test-name pattern. Components are go.work modules, modules and web, plus extra paths per pattern. A universal list selects every test: charts, CRDs, deploy/kind, containers, signing and the e2e harness.
  • hack/ci_scope.py e2e is a new mode, run as a new changes step.
    • It maps changed paths to components and lifts library changes through the existing module closure.
    • It emits a -run regex per bucket (e2e-run), switches for multicluster, upgrade, web live and capture overhead, and the selected bot-fast matrix.
    • A changed test/e2e/*.go file selects its own tests plus the tests that use its helpers.
    • An unmapped path forces the full suite.
  • hack/ci_scope.py verify-suites is a new mode, run in e2e bucket coverage. It checks that every bucketed test matches an entry, every component id exists, and every code component is named or listed as unexercised.
  • ci.yaml:
    • Each e2e-go leg (both arches, shared steps) runs its bucket's selected tests, and skips every step when none is selected.
    • The ratelimit tail runs only when its test is selected.
    • Multicluster, upgrade, web live and game bot follow the selection.
    • Capture overhead keeps its spec 007 path filter and also needs the selection.
    • e2e-postgres is unchanged.
    • The summary table shows N of M tests per suite.
  • Full runs are unchanged: master pushes, manual runs, the ci: full-run label and selection-rule changes. In a full run, every regex equals buckets.sh regex <bucket>.

Deviations from the spec text (recorded in the brief and contracts)

  1. New mode e2e instead of new keys on mode modules. Two existing tests assert mode modules' exact output. The reasoning is the same as the PR 1 option A decision.
  2. No e2e-exclude matrix list. GitHub applies include after exclude, and each bucket has an include entry, so an excluded bucket would come back as a new leg without arch. Unselected legs skip their steps instead, which takes a few seconds and starts no cluster.
  3. Mode bots is unchanged. Mode e2e emits the selected bot matrix.
  4. The agent counts for every test that starts a GameServer pod, since the sidecar runs there and backups quiesce through it. valgul settled this as OD-12 (2026-10-22): the mapping stays, and US1-1, US1-2 and quickstart rows 1–2 were reworded to match.

Validation (T030)

Quickstart scenarios 1–4 and 12 ran as throwaway drafts #780–#784 (OD-11). The results are in specs/023-change-based-test-selection/validation.md:

  • The chart, e2e-test-file and unmapped-path scenarios matched the spec.
  • The agent and sentinel scenarios led to OD-12.

Tests

  • hack/test_ci_scope.py:
    • E2ESelectionTests: US1 scenarios 1–4, unmapped path, docs only.
    • VerifySuitesTests: rules 1, 2 and 5, plus the real map.
    • E2ERunTests: the full regex equals buckets.sh regex, partial runs give subsets, the ratelimit tail.
  • test/e2e/ci_selection_e2e_test.go: six TestCISelection_* tests in the operator bucket. Each runs the selector on a git archive HEAD copy. It then checks that every emitted regex hits at least one compiled test and nothing outside its bucket.

Local checks were compile-only (CLAUDE.md rule 8): py_compile, JSON and YAML parse, go test -tags e2e -c. CI is the verifier.

Scout brief: specs/023-change-based-test-selection/briefs/e2e-selection.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • CI Improvements
    • End-to-end checks now select tests relevant to changed components and files, helping avoid running unrelated suites.
    • Broad, unmapped, or full-run changes continue to trigger the complete test suite.
    • CI validates test-selection coverage and reports which suites are selected or skipped, making check results clearer.
    • Specialized test jobs run only when their tests are selected.

Add test/e2e/suite-components.json and ci_scope.py modes e2e and
verify-suites (spec 023 US1, T019-T028). Each e2e-go leg runs only its
bucket's selected tests and skips itself when none is selected; the
multicluster, upgrade, web live, game bot and capture overhead jobs
follow the same selection. An unmapped path forces the full suite and
fails the e2e bucket coverage job.

Walkthrough

This PR adds change-based E2E test selection using suite and component metadata. It emits selected test regexes and job gates, updates CI workflows to use those outputs, and adds selector validation, automated tests, and scenario results.

Changes

E2E test selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Selection rules and suite map
test/e2e/suite-components.json, specs/023-change-based-test-selection/contracts/*, specs/023-change-based-test-selection/{briefs/e2e-selection.md,OPEN-DECISIONS.md,quickstart.md,spec.md}
The suite map defines universal paths, test-to-component mappings, and unexercised components. The contracts and specifications describe the selection rules and outputs, including helper-file selection.
Selection engine and summary outputs
hack/ci_scope.py, hack/test_ci_scope.py, specs/023-change-based-test-selection/briefs/e2e-selection.md
ci_scope.py selects tests from changed paths, components, and helper dependencies. It emits per-suite outputs, validates suite maps, and updates selection summary rows. Python tests cover selection, validation, and unmapped paths.
CI workflow selection and gates
.github/workflows/ci.yaml, specs/023-change-based-test-selection/briefs/e2e-selection.md, specs/023-change-based-test-selection/tasks.md
The workflow passes selector outputs to E2E jobs, skips unselected setup and test steps, gates specialized jobs, and checks suite coverage.
Selection tests and recorded validation
test/e2e/ci_selection_e2e_test.go, test/e2e/buckets.sh, specs/023-change-based-test-selection/{tasks.md,validation.md}
The E2E tests exercise selection scenarios and check emitted regexes. The validation report records scenario outcomes and the corresponding updated expectations.

Mode e2e already forces the full suite for an unmapped path, but mode
modules kept its narrow go-exclude list, so the go matrix could end up
with no legs. Treat an unmapped path as an unknown diff there too.

Universal paths such as .dockerignore, containers/ and signing/ select
every e2e test but match no e2e path filter, so the e2e and image gates
stayed off. Mode e2e now outputs `universal`, and the combine step folds
it into e2ev. T017 is marked withdrawn in part to match the contract.
