A lender's rows lie in slots of its regions: row i occupies slot slots[i] in every region region_indices lists, its bytes those slots back to back in the listed order. The contract described rows by one address in one region instead, which a row spanning the regions of several pools cannot give, and left out the page ordinals the native backend reads to pair rows with a peer's.

  • LayerGroupRows.slots and LayerGroupRows.region_indices replace addresses and region_index; both are given or both are None.
  • LayerGroupRows.page_ordinals gives the request's page each row holds.
  • A backend still refuses rows it does not recognize with InvalidSubmission, rows in a region it has not registered among them.

Dev Engineer Review

LayerGroupRows replaces addresses and region_index with slots and region_indices, and adds page_ordinals. slots and region_indices must both be None or both be provided. When provided, each row occupies the same slot in each listed, distinct region, with its bytes ordered by region_indices. Backends reject rows they do not recognize with InvalidSubmission. This changes the public backend contract and requires updates to implementations and consumers.

No current review findings were supplied, so review severity counts are unavailable. The supplied CI report says the run failed; no test execution details were provided.

QA Engineer Review

The modified test file pins protocol members and signatures, checks runtime-protocol membership, and updates structural fixtures for page ordinals, slots, and region indices. It does not test invalid submissions or region registration behavior. The unittest directory is included in multiple test-db/ CI lists. No manual-QA list entry was found. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up for behavioral contract validation. The supplied CI result reports failure; specific test outcomes are unavailable.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/disaggregation/base/backend.py: Verify implementations use page_ordinals, slots, and ordered region_indices, and no longer depend on the removed properties. Verify rejection of unrecognized rows and handling of unregistered regions.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/disaggregation/test_backend_contract.py: Checks protocol signatures, runtime-protocol requirements, and fixture metadata. Its parent unittest directory is listed in the test-db/ CI lists.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The backend row contract now uses page ordinals, optional slot indices, and optional region indices instead of addresses and a single region index. Contract tests use the updated fields and constructor shape.

Changes

Layer group row contract

Layer / File(s) Summary

tensorrt_llm/_torch/disaggregation/base/backend.py, tests/unittest/_torch/disaggregation/test_backend_contract.py
LayerGroupRows adds page ordinals and replaces addresses and a single region index with optional slots and ordered region indices. The contract fixtures and protocol checks use the updated shape.

Priority: Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to a6fd0

The row contract now names slots and regions, but the blob backend still expects addresses and a single region index. Any caller that follows the new contract would fail on submission with an AttributeError instead of transferring rows. Migrate the blob backend in this PR, or confirm a follow-up change in the stack, before merging.

LGTM. One note: #20884 and #20473 still read addresses / region_index, so each will need a small follow-up to read slots / region_indices once this lands; CI is unaffected in either merge order.

LGTM. I will have to update my RI PRs accordingly.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Test a submission across two regions.

The changed contract defines ordered, multi-region row bytes, but the supplied tests only check member signatures and structural protocol conformance. A backend can ignore the second region while those tests pass. Add a submission test with two registered regions and distinct bytes in each slot. Assert the transferred row contains both regions in region_indices order. As per path instructions, “Review TensorRT-LLM production-code changes for meaningful test coverage in addition to normal code review.”

Major · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Update the blob backend before replacing the row fields.

If a caller submits a group that implements this contract, BlobBackend._checked_group_rows reads group.addresses and group.region_index. Neither member is required now. The submission raises AttributeError instead of transferring rows or rejecting an invalid submission with InvalidSubmission. Update the validator and row-batch construction to use slots and every listed region, including their byte order. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
