Limits the number of variates per forward pass in the shared forecasting adapter, configured per model via ModelConfig.max_variates (32 for TimesFM3, matching the published TimesFM-3 evaluation).

  • _split_variates(): if targets and consumed covariates (by supported_feature_stypes) exceed the limit, covariates are randomly subsampled with a fixed seed, future-known ones first, to leave room for at least one target. Targets are then forecast in chunks of equal size, padding the last chunk with leading targets.
  • forecast(): runs one model call per chunk and drops the padding outputs.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • TimesFM3 evaluation supports up to 32 variates per model pass. Larger target sets are processed in chunks, while context is limited to 15,360 time steps and up to 31 variates.
  • Documentation
    • Updated run instructions describe symmetric averaging across two estimators and the evaluation limits.

The GIFT-Eval predictor now applies an optional variate limit. TimesFM3 sets the limit to 32. The predictor selects context variates and processes target variates in chunks, padding the final chunk when needed.

Changes: TimesFM3 variate limit

Layer / File(s) Summary
Variate limit configuration
benchmark/timeseries/model.py, benchmark/timeseries/gift_eval/README.md
ModelConfig adds optional max_variates, set to 32 for TimesFM3. The README documents averaging over two estimators, context truncation to 15,360 time steps, and the variate limit.
Predictor variate handling
benchmark/timeseries/gift_eval/predictor.py
When configured, the predictor retains up to max_variates - 1 numerical context variates. It selects a sorted subset with seed 42 when needed, then chunks target variates, pads the final chunk, concatenates predictions, and trims them to the original target count.

The new TimesFM3 variate handling is safe for supported GIFT-Eval inputs, but existing quantile parsing risks remain open in sdm/evaluation/regression.py.

Compare quantile levels, not their spellings.

If one target uses q50 and another uses q500, both denote the median, but this comparison rejects the table. The docstring permits both spellings and requires equal levels. Compare parsed levels in each target group instead of requiring identical suffixes.

Update the column validation around the `columns` comparison to compare parsed
quantile levels within each target group rather than requiring identical suffix
spellings. Accept equivalent levels such as q50 and q500 while preserving the
requirement that every target has the same quantile levels.

59-59: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Reject non-digit quantile suffixes.

If a column is named q-50, the layout check accepts it and this expression returns -0.05. That is not a valid quantile level, and the documented suffix allows digits only. Check the suffix before converting it.

Validate each quantile suffix in the `digits` processing flow before converting
it, rejecting any suffix containing non-digit characters. Keep the existing
level calculation for valid digit-only suffixes.

Use a floating-point dtype for quantile levels.

TableTensor permits an integer numerical block through its direct constructor. For integer predictions, values.new_tensor(levels) casts the fractional levels to integers and returns zeros for values such as 0.1 and 0.9. Preserve floating prediction dtypes and use the default floating dtype for integer predictions.

Update the quantile-level tensor construction in the return path to preserve
floating-point prediction dtypes while using the default floating dtype when
values is integer, so fractional levels are not truncated. Use the appropriate
torch dtype utilities and keep the values tensor unchanged.
test/evaluation/test_regression.py: 1

10-17: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Add dtype and device parametrization to test_to_quantiles. Include an integer case that catches truncated levels.

The test covers only CPU float32, and the path instructions require parametrization over relevant dtype and device variants. to_quantiles returns levels in the input dtype and device, so those variants affect the output. An integer numerical block also produces truncated levels, and this test cannot detect that. The TableTensor constructor accepts an integer numerical block, even though from_tensor classifies integer tensors as categorical.

Parametrize the floating dtypes and use withCUDA for the device. Assert the device of the levels, and check the level values against a tensor with the same dtype and device.

🧪 Suggested test change
-def test_to_quantiles() -> None:
+@withCUDA
+@pytest.mark.parametrize("dtype", [torch.float32, torch.float64])
+def test_to_quantiles(dtype: torch.dtype, device: torch.device) -> None:
     pred = sdm.TableTensor.from_tensor(
-        torch.randn(2, 5, 4),
+        torch.randn(2, 5, 4, dtype=dtype, device=device),
         columns=["b__q10", "b__q90", "a__q10", "a__q90"],
     )
     values, levels = sdm.evaluation.to_quantiles(pred)
     torch.testing.assert_close(values, pred.numerical.view(2, 5, 2, 2))
-    torch.testing.assert_close(levels, torch.tensor([0.1, 0.9]))
+    torch.testing.assert_close(
+        levels, torch.tensor([0.1, 0.9], dtype=dtype, device=device)
+    )
+    assert levels.device == device

Add the withCUDA import from sdm.testing.decorators and the pytest import if the file does not already have them.

Keep the integer case separate from the parametrized test. Build an integer numerical block directly with the TableTensor constructor. Expect float levels [0.1, 0.9]. The current code casts both values to 0 through values.new_tensor(levels), so this case fails and exposes the truncation.

Parametrize test_to_quantiles over float32 and float64 and the withCUDA device
variants, constructing the input on the selected dtype and device; assert the
level values use that same dtype and device and verify levels.device. Add the
needed pytest and withCUDA imports if absent. Add a separate
integer-numerical-block case using the TableTensor constructor and assert levels
remain floating-point [0.1, 0.9] rather than being truncated.
