feat(gpui): ship portable Linux packages: AppImage, arm64, and Nix - #121
Part of #87: the Linux packages and the install docs. macOS Developer ID signing is in #123, which stays a draft because there is no Apple Developer account yet.
Problem
The .deb is built on Ubuntu 26.04 and requires libc6 (>= 2.43). It does not install on Ubuntu 24.04 or Debian 13.
Linux developers who are not on Debian-based distributions have no package. On NixOS the flake builds the app from source, which takes a long time.
No aarch64 Linux packages are built.
Result
Download
Runs on
buzz-gpui_<version>_amd64.deb / _arm64.deb
Ubuntu 24.04 and later, Debian 13 and later
Buzz-<version>-linux-x86_64.AppImage / -aarch64
Any Linux with glibc 2.39 or later (for example Fedora 40 and later). No host libfuse2 or system GStreamer needed; extract-and-run works when FUSE mounting is unavailable.
Flake package buzz-gpui-voltage-bin
NixOS and Nix on x86_64 or aarch64 Linux. Prebuilt, and no nix-ld needed.
Change
package-deb.sh.
Builds in ubuntu:24.04 for the runner's architecture, with the matching Node.
Keeps the cargo home and target directory separate for each Ubuntu image.
With BUZZ_GPUI_APPIMAGE=1, also wraps the same build in an AppImage.
build-appimage.sh.
Uses linuxdeploy, appimagetool and the static type2 runtime, each pinned with a SHA-256.
Bundles the GStreamer plugins that bundle-macos-gstreamer.py bundles, with PulseAudio and ALSA in place of Core Audio, plus the plugin scanner.
Includes the matching glib-networking GIO TLS backend and its dependencies for HTTPS media. AppRun points GStreamer and GIO at the bundled plugins and modules only, and gives GStreamer a registry of its own.
check-appimage.sh. Runs the AppImage in ubuntu:24.04, debian:13 and fedora:43 containers. These containers have no GStreamer and only the desktop libraries that the AppImage exclude list leaves to the system. The check requires that:
every ELF resolves its libraries;
the bundled Node runs the 7 plugins;
the provider runs whenever its executable is present, without requiring a build-time environment flag;
buzz-gpui --gst-check passes for local clips and an HTTPS clip served by bundled Node. The containers trust a temporary test CA and have no host GIO TLS backend; certificate verification stays enabled.
Release workflow. The Linux job is a matrix (ubuntu-latest, ubuntu-24.04-arm). Each leg builds the .deb and the AppImage, checks the AppImage and uploads both.
Nix.
nix/appimage.nix runs the release AppImage in nixpkgs' appimageTools FHS environment, with the desktop libraries the AppImage leaves to the system.
nix/release.json pins each system's AppImage by URL and SRI hash. The flake exposes buzz-gpui-voltage-bin only for systems with a pin. It merges with nixpkgs.lib.recursiveUpdate, so evaluation never forces pkgs for systems that nixpkgs dropped.
A new nix-pin job in the release workflow runs after release. It writes the pin with scripts/pin-nix-release.py and commits it through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs the commit, as main requires. It then opens a PR, since main takes changes only through approved PRs. Because it is a separate job, it can be re-run without re-publishing the release.
The pin starts empty. The package appears after the first release that has AppImages and the merge of its pin PR.
App changes (appimage.rs). A copy runs from an AppImage only when $APPIMAGE is set and the running binary is inside the canonicalized $APPDIR. Such a copy:
registers the image file, not the temporary mount, as the buzz:// handler (deep_links::handler_target);
is a Browser install, and the updater offers Buzz-*-linux-<arch>.AppImage (InstallKind::linux_release, Platform::detect). Unit tests cover these decisions directly.
--gst-check on Linux no longer requires dav1ddec. Ubuntu 24.04 packages no GStreamer AV1 decoder, so the AppImage does not play AV1. The README states this.
Docs.
Step 1 of voltage/remote-agents.md lists the release downloads and the Nix package. Building from source stays available as buzz-gpui-voltage.
The GPUI README documents the AppImage.
Validation
CI on the pre-review commit. On aarch64, check-appimage.sh passed in all three distributions. Every ELF resolved its libraries, the 7 plugins answered on Node 22.23.3, the provider supported deploy, stop and recovery, and the GStreamer self-check passed. The only note was the optional deinterlace element, which the macOS bundle does not ship either. GPUI Test, Format and lint (including voltage-sandbox clippy), the Windows and macOS checks, and the Nix build passed.
Local real-app check with the updated packaging. Repacked the x86_64 Buzz binaries from CI run 41912670594 with the updated build-appimage.sh. The production check-appimage.sh passed on Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 13 and Fedora 43: every ELF resolved its libraries, all seven plugins answered, the provider supported deploy/stop/recovery, and the app encoded and played its voice note, local WebM/H.264 MOV/MP3 clips, and the certificate-verified HTTPS clip. The containers had no host GStreamer or GIO TLS backend.
TLS regression check. A separate package with gst-launch-1.0 in place of Buzz also played local and HTTPS media on all three distributions. Removing the bundled TLS module made the same HTTPS playback fail.
Nix binary package. Built nix/appimage.nix against that real x86_64 AppImage and ran the Nix wrapper's --gst-check successfully for voice-note encoding and the three local media formats. No Rust source build was needed. Native GUI and aarch64 Nix runtime were not exercised locally.
Review fixes. Added the FUSE extraction fallback, separate ARM64 install instructions, and provider detection from the extracted executable instead of BUZZ_GPUI_VOLTAGE.
Static checks. shellcheck, actionlint and rustfmt pass. nix eval of packages.x86_64-linux passes with the empty pin. pin-nix-release.py produces the same hash as nix hash file --sri. The %2B-encoded release URLs resolve.
Not yet run: The nix-pin publishing job first runs on the next release dispatch. The release pin is intentionally still empty; the flake package appears after the first AppImage release and the merge of its pin PR.
Agent review. No blocking findings. Fixed from the review:
APPDIR is canonicalized, so a symlinked TMPDIR still counts as an AppImage;
an AppImage under /opt now registers its handler;
the decisions take the AppImage path as an input, so tests cover the production functions;
edits to appimage.rs and gst_bundle.rs now trigger the package lanes;
the local cargo-deb install is kept separate for each image.
All four CodeRabbit findings are fixed and their review threads are resolved. The current commit is rerunning in CI.
Known limitations
AppRun exports GST_PLUGIN_SYSTEM_PATH_1_0, GST_PLUGIN_SCANNER_1_0 and GST_REGISTRY_1_0, and child processes inherit them. Affected children include agents, terminals and programs started through xdg-open. A GStreamer program started from Buzz therefore sees only the bundled plugins. gst_bundle.rs does the same inside Buzz.app.
GStreamer rescans the plugins on every launch. The mount path changes each launch, so the registry cache never matches. The scan runs off the UI thread, in warm_up.
AppRun also exports GIO_MODULE_DIR and clears GIO_EXTRA_MODULES. This keeps the bundled GLib with its matching TLS module. Child processes inherit that module path, just as they inherit the GStreamer paths above.
The new packages reach users only after a release. That happens when the release workflow is dispatched after this merges.

The Linux release workflow now builds Debian packages and AppImages for x86_64 and aarch64. The app detects AppImage installations for deep links and updates. New scripts check AppImage dependencies and media playback, and the documentation describes Linux installation options.

Summary
Build and publish Linux packages apps/buzz-gpui/scripts/package-deb.sh, apps/buzz-gpui/scripts/build-appimage.sh, .github/workflows/voltage-buzz-gpui-release.yml
The packaging scripts support x86_64 and aarch64 builds, use Ubuntu 24.04, and can create AppImages. The release workflow builds and uploads .deb and .AppImage files for both architectures.
The app identifies an AppImage path from its environment and executable location. Linux and FreeBSD desktop-handler registration uses that path when available.
AppImage installations use browser-based updates. Release selection matches Linux AppImage assets by architecture. Tests and the release fixture cover AppImage assets.
Check and document AppImage behavior apps/buzz-gpui/scripts/check-appimage.sh, apps/buzz-gpui/crates/app/src/gst_bundle.rs, apps/buzz-gpui/README.md, voltage/remote-agents.md
The check script tests AppImage dependencies and media playback in Ubuntu, Debian, and Fedora containers. The documentation covers Linux packages, AppImage requirements and behavior, and release installation instructions.

I am addressing the four CodeRabbit findings on this branch: bundle and test GIO TLS support for HTTPS media, detect the provider from the extracted image, document the FUSE extraction fallback, and give ARM its own install command. I will preserve the Nix AppImage package and release-pin work already added in b32f340.
Developers can now install the Voltage build from a release download
without Nix, on any Linux, or prebuilt through Nix.
- Build the .deb on Ubuntu 24.04 instead of 26.04. The 26.04 package
required libc6 >= 2.43, so it did not install on Ubuntu 24.04 or
Debian 13.
- BUZZ_GPUI_APPIMAGE=1 also wraps the same build in an AppImage with the
static type2 runtime (no host libfuse2). The AppImage carries the GStreamer
plugins that Buzz.app bundles, with PulseAudio and ALSA in place of
Core Audio. Its AppRun points GStreamer at them and uses a registry of
its own. The matching GIO TLS backend and its dependencies support HTTPS.
- check-appimage.sh runs the AppImage in Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 13 and
Fedora 43 containers that have no GStreamer. Every ELF must resolve its
libraries, the bundled Node must run the plugins and the provider, and
--gst-check must pass for local media and a certificate-verified HTTPS clip.
- The release workflow builds both packages on x86_64 and aarch64.
- The flake's buzz-gpui-voltage-bin runs the pinned release AppImage in
nixpkgs' appimageTools environment. NixOS needs no nix-ld, and the app
does not compile. After each release, the release workflow opens a
pull request that pins the new AppImages in nix/release.json.
- In an AppImage, the buzz:// handler and the updater use the image file,
not the temporary mount. The updater offers the AppImage asset for
download. Unit tests cover these decisions directly.
- dav1ddec is not required on Linux, because Ubuntu 24.04 packages no
GStreamer AV1 decoder.
- Point step 1 of voltage/remote-agents.md at the release downloads and
the Nix package.

All four review findings are fixed in dc4ca36 and CodeRabbit has resolved their threads.
Validation completed with the real x86_64 Buzz binaries from the preceding CI run, repackaged using the updated build script:
Production check-appimage.sh passed on Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 13 and Fedora 43: ELF dependencies, seven plugins, the actual provider, voice-note encoding, local media and certificate-verified HTTPS playback.
The regression check fails HTTPS playback when the bundled TLS module is removed.
The unchanged Nix AppImage recipe built successfully. Its wrapper passed the real app's media self-check without compiling Buzz from source.
The new CI matrix is still running. A full new CodeRabbit review hit its included-review limit; the existing four findings were individually checked and resolved. Native GUI and aarch64 Nix runtime were not exercised locally.
Human smoke check: launch the new AppImage or Nix package, open your community, play an HTTPS media attachment and follow a buzz:// link back into the app. Playback should complete and the link should open its target conversation. Human testing has not been recorded here.
