fix(kiro): rotate on a 400 its validator calls improperly formed - #7373
hedging8563 wants to merge 2 commits into
Conversation
Kiro answers `400 ValidationException: Improperly formed request` when the identity a request was routed under cannot serve it. classifyKiroRefusal returned `other`, so the rotation loop stopped: the account stayed selected, no other login was tried, and inside a combo the 400 ended the chain even though a later target could serve the turn. Classify it as the account-scoped kind `profile` (400 only, and both the vendor exception name and the "improperly formed request" wording are required, so a genuinely bad payload or a caller echoing one token stays terminal). Rotation and the existing Kiro cooldown apply unchanged. comboFailureDecision treats the same shape, also inside a transport-wrapped frame, as a hop, before the generic invalid_request_error stop.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Match the parsed refusal fields before granting a combo hop.
For {"metadata":"ValidationException","message":"Improperly formed request"}, classifyKiroRefusal returns other, but this predicate returns true. It finds the two tokens in unrelated fields. The combo layer therefore hops on a refusal that the Kiro account layer treats as terminal. Unwrap the Provider error 400: frame, parse the body, and apply the same reason and message checks as classifyKiroRefusal. Add this split-field case to the predicate tests. As per path instructions, “Flag Node-only APIs that break under Bun, provider/adapter contract drift, and changes that bypass the shared routing/config layers.”

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Restrict the Kiro profile hop to Kiro targets.
comboFailureDecision handles failures from every combo provider, but this branch does not know which provider failed. If a non-Kiro target returns status 400 with both phrases in its error text, the branch hops instead of applying the generic terminal-invalid-request rule. Pass the failed target’s provider through the shared combo failure path. Apply isKiroAccountProfileRefusal only when that provider is Kiro, and add a non-Kiro regression case. As per coding guidelines, “Preserve existing public exports and configuration compatibility unless the task explicitly changes them.” As per path instructions, “Flag Node-only APIs that break under Bun, provider/adapter contract drift, and changes that bypass the shared routing/config layers.”

[P2] Fence the Kiro-specific hop by the failed provider — src/combos/failover.ts:861.
comboFailureDecision is shared by every target, while the new isKiroAccountProfileRefusal(status, message) branch sees no provider identity. A non-Kiro target returning HTTP 400 with ValidationException: Improperly formed request now hops where its invalid-request verdict previously stopped. Those words alone do not prove that another account or provider can serve it; this can resend an invalid payload to another declared target. The unresolved CodeRabbit thread identifies the same missing fence.
Pass trustworthy failed-target identity into the decision or constrain this rule at the Kiro-owned boundary. Add non-Kiro and unrelated/malformed-payload negative controls alongside a Kiro account-rotation/combo exhaustion integration test; current unit fixtures demonstrate string matching, not successful account recovery. Keep the Draft and update the owning Kiro/failover structure contract (none is changed in this diff). This is scoped static correctness feedback at 58f9fd8c501ee450d605a81d4fe1e5e341e0e59f, not a live Kiro probe, execution approval, sponsorship or merge approval.

Summary
Kiro answers
400 ValidationException: Improperly formed requestwhen the identity a request was routed under cannot serve it.classifyKiroRefusalreturnedotherfor this shape, so the account stayed selected, no other login was tried, and inside a combo the 400 ended the chain even when a later target could serve the turn.classifyKiroRefusalnow returns the account-scoped kindprofilefor this shape. It needs status 400 and both vendor tokens (theValidationExceptionname and the "improperly formed request" wording), so a genuinely bad payload, or a caller that echoes only one token, stays terminal. Rotation and the existing Kiro cooldown apply unchanged.comboFailureDecisiontreats the same shape as a hop, also when it arrives wrapped asProvider error 400: {...}. It is checked before the genericinvalid_request_errorstop.We run OpenCodex as a shared gateway with several Kiro logins and saw this 400 reach clients while other logins and combo targets could have served the turn.
Verification
On the rebased head (Bun 1.4.3):
bun test tests/providers/kiro/kiro-refusal.test.ts tests/codex-integration/combos.test.ts: 102 pass, 0 fail (467 expects).bun scripts/privacy-scan.ts: passed.bunx tsc --noEmit -p .: exit 0.New cases: the classifier convicts only the two-token 400 shape (and not a bare "improperly formed request", a bare
ValidationException, or other statuses); the combo policy hops on the raw and the wrapped shape and stops on the one-token variants.I did not run the full
bun run testsuite; the change touches only these two functions, and the focused files above cover both callers.Checklist
